Philip Cust

Meet the team – Philip Cust

Philip, who lives in Manchester, is one of Healthy Investment’s longest serving members of the team, joining the Society back in 2007.

After graduating from Sheffield University with an Honours Degree in Finance and Accounting, Philip worked in a variety of industries prior to settling for a career in financial services.

Philip explained, ‘over the years I’ve worked across most of the administration and finance functions at Healthy Investment before taking up my role as Finance Manager.’

Working with a small team Philip is responsible for the production of management information, analysis of investment performance and preparing and submitting the regulatory returns for the Society required by the Prudential Regulation Authority.

‘I’ve seen many changes in the years that I have worked for Healthy Investment, not least the amount of members’ funds that we look after which has grown from around £20 million when I started to over £190 million now. There have been huge regulatory changes, especially with the way we have, under the European Solvency II rules, to account for the investments we hold within our With-profits Funds.’

‘The transformation I have seen is really exciting and as we continue to grow I’m looking forward to being a part of that growth.’

Philip has been involved in various training initiatives that the trade association for mutual financial services, the Association of Financial Mutuals, provides. He has recently completed their management training programme ‘Accelerate’ and is a regular attender of the AFM’s Emerging Leaders Forum.  ‘The opportunity to meet with other managers within the mutual financial services sector has been vital for me and has given me the tools and confidence to drive change here at Healthy Investment.’

When Philip is not working he’s nearing the end of his Chartered Institute of Management Accountants exams and is an Oldham Athletic football fan. ‘To be honest I’m not sure which of these I find the biggest challenge, although as a manager there’s a lot that can be learnt from Paul Scholes tenure as manager of Oldham.’

Philip has a two year old boy called Ewan, who is already looking like he might be a better footballer than his dad.
